MIKOH Smart&Secure Defends RFID Electronic Vehicle Registration
July 24, 2007WASHINGTON -- MIKOH Corporation (ASX:MIK), a leading company focused on ensuring the physical security of RFID tags, has expanded its Smart&Secure technology suite to include tamper-indicating RFID physical security for electronic vehicle registration (EVR) applications.
EVR dramatically enhances registration enforcement through the use of RFID in addition to traditional paper-based forms. The EVR tags are monitored as vehicles pass under readers at normal driving speeds. Readers can be placed at tollgates, underpasses and other convenient locations to automate the monitoring and enforcement of registration compliance. Additionally, law enforcement personnel may be equipped with handheld readers to interrogate tags while documenting traffic violations and other traffic stop encounters. Tamper-indication technology is imperative in EVR applications to safeguard against RFID tag theft and fraud.
"Thousands of unregistered vehicles cost the U.S. and other national government entities substantial revenue dollars due to non-compliance and inadequate enforcement policies," said Andrew Strauch, vice president of product marketing and management for MIKOH Corporation. "EVR is an extremely viable RFID business model that combats lost registration revenue and fraud while reducing enforcement operating costs."
MIKOH Smart&Secure technology disables an EVR RFID tag if tampering occurs. Physically compromising or removing a Smart&Secure tag damages a dedicated tamper detection circuit and alerts RFID readers to the tampering. This prevents tags from being stolen, removed and reapplied to vehicles not matching the original registration information.
"EVR systems ensure process efficiency in complying with different vehicle-specific legislation. EVR RFID enables automatic validation of vehicle identification data, thereby, reducing the cost of labor-intensive enforcement systems," said Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Priyanka Gouthaman. "Unlike standard license plates, EVR RFID tags cannot be easily moved from one vehicle to another due to tamper-indication technology like Smart&Secure from MIKOH."
Interest for Smart&Secure has been steadily gaining momentum in the EVR space. MIKOH has sold Smart&Secure tags for a solution currently being deployed in a small island country with more than 30,000 vehicles.
